British motorists should be grateful for £60 speeding fine

Motorists caught speeding in England should be happy with the £60 fine handed to them and be grateful that it's not more. A motorist caught speeding in Switzerland was fined a record £180,000 for driving his Ferrari Testarossa at 85mph through a village.

The fine was calculated on the unnamed motorist's wealth which was valued by the courts at £14.1million.

The record fine is more than double the previous record which was handed to a Porsche driver in Zurich in 2008.

Defending its decision to impose such a hefty fine, the court gave this statement: "The accused ignored elementary traffic rules with a powerful vehicle out of a pure desire for speed."

The Swiss media reported that the driver owns a villa with four other luxury cars as well as the Ferrari.

No doubt this will help pacify motorists that have been given speeding fines in the UK.

The post-Christmas wallow

So, with Christmas over, like nearly everyone else in the UK I am sated to the point of surfeit and with my added bit of midriff can't help but feel a little bit self-conscious and physically ridiculous. Proprioceptively, I'm still coming to terms with my extra paunch and occasionally find myself coming to on the sofa with a start with a feeling that I'm wallowing in my unsightly lifebelt of human flesh.

I fear the worst. By now I should have been running every day, but, with inclement weather, I've not been able to get out and pound the pavements even once through fear that I might skate my way to landing facedown in black ice, slip on sludge or snow or impale an eyeball in the sketchy afternoon light.

Left with the chocolates I could have done without, a ripening taste for hot whisky toddies and little else do to with an evening other than switch on the television, a change in the weather can't come soon enough. With road conditions as they are I can't even get to the gym.

I just hope I don't have to wait until February, by then I fear it will be too late and that I'll be bloated beyond recognition.

But I know I'm not alone, practically everyone in the UK currently faces the same dilemma. And with news that dating website beautifulpeople.com has removed 5,000 people from its database for looking too fat, I'm left wondering just how many of them were British.

The first time I … had a veggie Christmas

I took to nut roast like a duck to Coco Pops.

My first Christmas as a vegetarian was not too successful. While I tucked in merrily to the roast potatoes, parsnips and even the brussel sprouts, I could only eye up the nut roast plonked on my plate with suspicion.

I first became veggie aged ten. While I was very stubborn about my anti-meat-eating convictions, I have to say that getting through that first Christmas cold turkey (or sans cold turkey as the case may be), proved the toughest.

Unfortunately, turkey substitutes and fake sausages wrapped in fake bacon just simply aren't as good as the real thing and I have yet to find the perfect alternative. While some may be happy with just the dinner minus the meat, I feel slightly hard done by if I don't have some kind of meat replacement.

Christmas this year will be yet another search for the holy grail of vegetarian Christmas dinners as the nut roast just doesn't cut it.
