Speed camera spies in space
Safe from angry motorists intent on vandalising the speed traps, the satellites are being tested by the Home Office on two sites in Southwark, London and the A374 between Antony and Torpoint in Cornwall.
According to the AA, the new system could cover a network of streets as opposed to a straight line and is likely to be used in residential areas.
Called the 'SpeedSpike' system, it works by calculating average speed between any two points in the network and has been developed by an American based company with an office in Hampshire.
The cameras can capture number plates in all weather conditions both day and night and allegedly will be inexpensive and easy to install.
However, for the motorist who likes to put their foot down, they may find that the new form of cameras could have a serious impact on their car insurance premiums as the risk of getting caught speeding increases.
